The key to a successful workout isn’t the number of reps you do or amount of weight you lift. A good workout always starts with a good warm up. Stretching is critical to warming up your muscles and preventing injury during your workout. Think of your muscles like a rubber band. A cold band can easily break but a warm one will have much more elasticity. To learn some useful warm ups for your next workout, read our latest blog post. http://blackcloverfitness.com/blog/57083/Warming-Up-Is-Key-to-Injury-Prevention Corey Cain, Owner Black Clover Fitness - 168th and Maple 402.991.7700 (call anytime) http://blackcloverfitness.blogspot.com corey@omahabootcamp.com TRANSCRIPTION: Do you always get in a warm up before your workout? If you don't warm up before you start you need to start making time for a good warm up before starting into your workout. There are numerous reasons to start with a warm up prior to working out with the key three reasons being that it will help enhance performance, help with injury prevention, and it gives you time to get focused and mentally prepared for the workout. What is the best way to warm up for your workout? Dynamic movements are by far the best, in my opinion. A dynamic movement involves moving a joint through its full range of motion. For example, doing some bodyweight lunges, bodyweight squats, push ups, and jumping jacks would be a good warm up. I prefer dynamic warm ups versus a static stretch. Think of your muscles like a rubber band. If you stretch a cold rubber band, it is more likely to break. Whereas a warm rubber band is more elastic and less likely to break even if stretched tight. Same goes with your muscles. If you stretch a cold muscle it isn't near as elastic and could lead to a strain or tear. By doing dynamic movements, the body and muscle temperature increase. With the increased blood flow through the body, more nutrients are delivered through the body, adding to increased energy production. The amount of time needed to warm up will vary between individuals based upon their age and what their workout will entail. I always recommend to get in a bare minimum of at least five minutes but sometimes a warm up will last up to 45 minutes or longer. If you don't currently warm up before your workout plan to take another five minutes or more to get in a warm up before your true workout starts. The little extra time will help you enhance performance, minimize injury, and get you focused for the test to come.

If you’re thinking of getting in shape this summer, we can help. One of the best activities you can do to get fit is one of the easiest. We’re talking about running, specifically running races. A 5K race is a good place to start, and you can train for it at your own pace. Once you’re ready to step up, we can help you find some more challenging races too. To learn more about running in the summer, watch this short video. learn more: http://blackcloverfitness.com/blog/69725/Our-Favorite-Summer-Runs Corey Cain, Owner Black Clover Fitness - 168th and Maple 402.991.7700 (call anytime) http://blackcloverfitness.blogspot.com corey@omahabootcamp.com TRANSCRIPTION: With summer in full swing, there are lots of 5K, 10K, half, and full Marathons out there to sign up for. Even if you have never been a runner, it's really never too late to start up. There are lots of different programs out there to get you started. One of the most commonly talked about and widely used is the "Couch to 5K" running plan. If you have been wanting to participate in a run, look at that program or get in contact with me and I get can you set up on another possible program that will work best for you. You can either be running to support a good cause, to participate with friends, or to gain better overall health. With gaining better health in mind a general rule of thumb is that the average runner will burn around 100 calories per mile. The actual amount of calories burned will vary based upon speed and body weight. For example, a 150 lb runner running a 5K will burn around 228 calories running at a 10 minute mile pace whereas if they ran at a 7:30 mile pace they would burn around 308 calories. Maybe knowing those numbers will keep you from grabbing that 215 calorie Snickers bar next time; as if you ate it you'd have to run around a 5K to just burn it back off. As I stated earlier, there are lots of different runs to partake in especially around the Omaha area. During the summer months, there are usually always at least 1 if not multiple runs every weekend to choose from. On a personal note, one race that I will try to partake in later this year is the Hy-Vee Pinky Swear 5K and Fun Run on September 30th to benefit pediatric cancer. In order to find a run that you would like to partake in, visit runningintheusa.com and omaharun.org. They have a big list and calendar full of events for you to choose from. Get signed up for a run to challenge yourself this summer. If you've never done a run before start with a 5K. If you've done lots of 5K's but nothing else why not try to crank it up a bit and challenge yourself with a 10K instead? Keep pushing yourself to become a better you this summer by signing up for a run! If you have any questions in the meantime, don’t hesitate to give us a call or send us an email. We look forward to hearing from you.

Cold and flu season is here. If you’re feeling a little under the weather, is it a good idea to still work out? If your symptoms are “above the neck” (i.e. stuffy nose, sore throat, runny nose), it’s generally OK to work out. However, you should monitor things closely and keep yourself hydrated regardless. To learn more about when it isn’t a good idea to work out when you’re sick, watch this short video. Learn more: http://blackcloverfitness.com/blog/76832/Health-Tips-for-Cold-and-Flu-Season Corey Cain, Owner Black Clover Fitness - 168th and Maple 402.991.7700 (call anytime) http://blackcloverfitness.blogspot.com corey@omahabootcamp.com TRANSCRIPTION: With the cold and flu season upon us, you may be wondering whether or not you should try to work out when you are feeling sick. For starters, the best general rule of thumb is that if all of your symptoms are "above your neck," you can work out. Now you may wonder, what exactly does that mean? "Above the neck" symptoms typically refer to what you have when you have a common cold such as a minor sore throat, nasal congestion, runny nose, and sneezing. If you have a fever, flu, or are experiencing aches and pains throughout all of your body when you are feeling ill, you should not work out. Working out with a cold will not make symptoms worse, but it won't help shorten any of your symptoms either. The best way to help with your workouts while you have a cold is to just stay extra hydrated throughout the workout and the whole day in general. Staying hydrated may help with congestion, which in turn will help with your overall workout productivity. When it comes to having a fever or the flu, it should come as common sense that working out is not a good option. Your body is already trying to fight and fend off the illness and adding extracurricular forces to this equation may only make things worse. Overall the simple answer is that if your symptoms are only "above the neck" go ahead and work out. Just be courteous of others around you and don’t spread anything to anybody. The biggest solution to all of this is water, water, and more water! Stay healthy! If you have any questions for me in the meantime, don’t hesitate to reach out. I’d love to hear from you.

Stair climbing requires eight to nine times more energy expenditure than sitting and burns about seven times more calories than lifting. You burn about 0.17 calories for every step you climb, so you burn roughly a calorie and a half for every 10 upward steps. 2. A single serving of coffee creamer is 35 calories and is 1 tbsp. I would guess the average Joe doesn’t use just one serving, so let’s assume he uses two, which would equal 70 calories. Over the course of the year, if he or she used creamer every day, that would amount to 25,550 calories, or roughly 7.3 pounds. It makes you wonder how important the creamer is. 3. A serving of french fries ranges on average from 300 to 400 calories per serving. If you could simply swap out your serving of fries for a cup of broccoli, you would save roughly 270-370 calories. That’s a lot of calories! 4. Stop hitting snooze. Studies show that as little as 30 extra minutes of sleep after the initial alarm goes off can cause the hunger stimulating hormone known as ghrelin to go into overdrive, stimulating hunger even when you are full. 5. Don’t skip meals. Seems easy, right? Then why do we do so often? When you don’t sufficiently fuel your body, it begins to conserve calories and slow your metabolism. Eat your meals! 7. Start drinking tea. Tea is packed with fat-attacking compounds called catechins. 8. Don’t skip the weights. The more muscle mass you have, the faster your metabolism works. And ladies, don’t you worry, lifting weights won’t make you big and bulky. Not only do you burn more calories than cardio alone, you continue to burn more throughout the day. Bonus: Let’s touch on the weights again. Lift heavy. Unless you are challenging your muscles with heavy enough weights, you will not see physical changes. The list is here, so now it’s up to you on whether you choose to utilize them or not. If you have any questions in the meantime, you can always give us a call or send us an email. We look forward to your success!

Most people who fail to achieve their desired fitness results are missing one key component: consistency. It’s true that working out once every week or only on the weekends is better than nothing, but it won’t get you incredible results. The only way to achieve your fitness goals is to get into a consistent routine. If you’re ready to end the cycle and finally start seeing results, check out my blog. http://blackcloverfitness.com/blog/68243/The-Key-Component-Your-Fitness-Routine-Is-Lacking Corey Cain, Owner Black Clover Fitness - 168th and Maple 402.991.7700 (call anytime) http://blackcloverfitness.blogspot.com corey@omahabootcamp.com TRANSCRIPTION: Consistency is a big factor in obtaining great health and fitness results. Yes, some exercise is obviously way better than none. However, the more consistent you are with your exercise, the better results you will have. If you are basketball player trying to improve your free throw percentage, shooting just one day a week won’t improve your percentage very much. If you practice three times or more a week, your percentage is very likely to improve. The more you practice, the better you will get. Additionally, if you are trying to lose weight but only eat healthy once a week, the weight isn’t going to come off. The same holds true for working out. As a weekend warrior who only goes to the gym once or twice a week, you won’t get the same results as someone who goes on a consistent, weekly basis. To be fair, a recent study released by JAMA Internal Medicine researchers found that weekend warriors had about a 40% lower risk of death due to cardiovascular disease, a 30% lower risk of overall death, and an 18% lower risk of death due to cancer than those who didn't exercise at all. So yes, some exercise is obviously better than none, but the fact remains that consistency will get you better results and lower those risks even further. By only working out once a week, you are more likely to have muscular and joint issues. In addition, depending on your overall level of fitness, your muscles will begin to atrophy just a few days after non-use. That means if you only workout once every five or six days, you’re basically starting over every time. That’s no way to get results. If you have any questions about how to get into a consistent routine or any other health and fitness questions, please feel free to give me a call or send me an email. I’m more than happy to help!

If one of your New Year’s resolutions for 2018 is to get back in shape, what are you waiting for? You can get started on your new workout routine right now. Today, I have a few tips to help you start out strong and stay motivated all throughout the year. To learn more, watch this short video. Learn more: http://blackcloverfitness.com/blog/75328/Don-t-Wait-to-Start-Your-New-Workout-Routine Corey Cain, Owner Black Clover Fitness - 168th and Maple 402.991.7700 (call anytime) http://blackcloverfitness.blogspot.com corey@omahabootcamp.com TRANSCRIPTION: As 2017 comes to an end, I’m sure a lot of you have your New Year’s goals in mind. One of the biggest goals for most people around this time of year is to get back into shape! Is getting back into shape one of your goals? If you answered yes to that question, my next question is, why wait until 2018 when you can start right now? I know that the holiday season is a busy time of year for everyone, but isn’t the whole year nearly as busy too? If your goal is to get back into shape this upcoming year, there is no need to wait. Go ahead, make the commitment, and start right now. If you’re excited to start up a workout plan, it’s best to get started now, before your initial desire and motivation fade away. With motivation in mind, hiring a personal trainer would be a great route to help keep you motivated and accountable throughout your workouts. It’s widely known that gym attendance drops after a few months and even a few weeks after January 1. Individuals lose their motivation to achieve their goals. By having a personal trainer, you will be held accountable and way less likely to just stop working out. There are many gyms around the city. I would say that going to any gym is better than no gym at all but of course, I’m biased. Joining Black Clover Fitness would be the best option for you. We have multiple options available with our training, including group workouts and one-on-one workouts. Give us a call to schedule a consultation or free workout to try us out first hand. We would be happy to help you. Don’t wait—get started now!

The weather is hot and pretty soon the grill will be, too. One of my favorite things to do is find new and interesting BBQ recipes. I like to find things that are more unique and adventurous than your standard old hot dog and potato salad. I have four delicious recipes to share with you today that are sure to make you the star of your summer potluck. Stuffed roasted BBQ chicken, anyone? To see all of my recipes, read my latest blog post. Corey Cain, Owner Black Clover Fitness - 168th and Maple 402.991.7700 (call anytime) http://blackcloverfitness.blogspot.com corey@omahabootcamp.com TRANSCRIPTION: Summertime means grilling time. What is the first thing you think of when you think about grilling? Burgers, hot dogs, and pasta salad? You are not alone. Why is it “normal” to be limited to only making those things when it comes to a BBQ? Because it’s easy, that’s why. Why not take your next BBQ to the next level with some “out of the box” recipes and ideas that will surely make people think twice when it comes to “normal” foods to bring to a BBQ? Now, these recipes may take a little more time, but the creativity involved will make people say, “WOW! I never would have thought about this.” I have provided two different main dish recipes and a couple of side dish recipes that you can make and/or bring to your next summer gathering that will be a hit with everyone. The best part about these recipes is that they are healthy. No more stuffing yourself with food that is loaded with fat and cholesterol. I assure you that you will not have leftovers unless you stash some away from everyone for yourself. Stuffed Roasted Barbeque Chicken Fish Tacos with a Twist BBQ Ranch Quinoa Salad Lightened Up 7-Layered Dip Spice up your next BBQ and show off that you can think outside the box to feed everyone something delicious, healthy, and easy to make this summer. Let me know what you think!
