Perhaps looking to build some muscle or lose some pounds? You are not alone. Here are eight simple tips you can start using tomorrow to help you get on your way to a better you in 2017: 1. Stair climbing requires eight to nine times more energy expenditure than sitting and burns about seven times more calories than lifting. You burn about 0.17 calories for every step you climb, so you burn roughly a calorie and a half for every 10 upward steps. 2. A single serving of coffee creamer is 35 calories and is 1 tbsp. I would guess the average Joe doesn’t use just one serving, so let’s assume he uses two, which would equal 70 calories. Over the course of the year, if he or she used creamer every day, that would amount to 25,550 calories, or roughly 7.3 pounds. It makes you wonder how important the creamer is. 3. A serving of french fries ranges on average from 300 to 400 calories per serving. If you could simply swap out your serving of fries for a cup of broccoli, you would save roughly 270-370 calories. That’s a lot of calories! 4. Stop hitting snooze. Studies show that as little as 30 extra minutes of sleep after the initial alarm goes off can cause the hunger stimulating hormone known as ghrelin to go into overdrive, stimulating hunger even when you are full. 5. Don’t skip meals. Seems easy, right? Then why do we do so often? When you don’t sufficiently fuel your body, it begins to conserve calories and slow your metabolism. Eat your meals! 7. Start drinking tea. Tea is packed with fat-attacking compounds called catechins. 8. Don’t skip the weights. The more muscle mass you have, the faster your metabolism works. And ladies, don’t you worry, lifting weights won’t make you big and bulky. Not only do you burn more calories than cardio alone, you continue to burn more throughout the day. Bonus: Let’s touch on the weights again. Lift heavy. Unless you are challenging your muscles with heavy enough weights, you will not see physical changes. However, it turns out that quite a few of those beliefs are myths. I could go on and on about the crazy things I have heard, but instead I'm going shed some truth on two of the most common ones. The first myth is that focusing solely on abdominal or “ab” exercises gets you a flatter stomach. While doing ab exercises will make your abdominal muscles stronger, it doesn't necessarily correlate with losing belly fat. You can’t choose a specific spot to lose fat. It’s true you will burn calories doing ab exercises, but doing only those exercises in general will not specifically burn your stomach fat. Your body fat is not attached to your muscle tissue, so strengthening your abdominal muscles won’t necessarily result in fat tissue loss specifically in your abs. If you really want that flatter stomach, you'll have the best results doing full body workouts and eating healthy versus relying solely on more and more crunches. Another very common myth is that women who lift weights become big and bulky. The main issue with this belief is that women do not have the hormones in their bodies that cause men to bulk up. Lifting heavy weights will make women stronger, but not necessarily bulky looking. In fact, an additional pound of lean body mass takes up way less mass than a pound of fat. So, why not gain some extra muscle to help you burn body fat and in turn trim down your body measurements? If you're a woman, don't be afraid utilize the weight room and push yourself with some heavy weights. Some of the other myths that I have heard throughout the years consist of: "The more you sweat the more fat you lose," or "You can only really lose weight by cutting out carbs,” or that "You can eat whatever you want as long as you train hard,” and that "Running is counterproductive to strength training.” Overall, just remember that everything you hear isn't always true! According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), obesity has doubled among children and quadrupled among adolescents over the last 30 years. Obesity within children increases risk for cardiovascular disease, elevated cholesterol, elevated blood pressure, pre-diabetes, as well as bone and joint disorders. In addition to physical impact, there is significant risk for psychological disorders such as low self-esteem and stigmatization. Children who suffer from obesity have a significantly higher likelihood of being obese as an adult. Obesity as an adult can lead to increased likelihood for developing heart disease, type II diabetes, stroke, osteoarthritis, and several forms of cancer. In the State of Nebraska, childhood obesity impacts roughly 14% of youth between ages 2 to 18. It is essential to stop this epidemic that is growing across America. Diverging and controlling the trend starts in the home and in school. It is extremely important for parents to feed their children well-balanced meals made up of the appropriate amounts of protein, whole grains, vegetables, and fruit, while limiting intake of processed foods and refined sugar. Schools need to take charge of the meals that are served to students from preschool to high school, and they must direct the focus of breakfast, lunch, and snacks toward healthy items that provide nutrient-rich value to children. Physical activity for children while at home and school are of the utmost importance in obesity prevention. Encouragement of children to participate in extracurricular activities by both parents and schools can mitigate the obesity trend. Overall, prevention through education of what a healthy lifestyle consists of is key to the future of youth in America.
